The 41st National Toilet Symposium 2025

Railways, airports, expressways, and roadside stations—
Restrooms in these vital transportation infrastructures, where countless people pass through each day, are essential spaces that support our freedom of movement.
The 41st National Toilet Symposium 2025 will provide an opportunity to reflect on the current state and future of such facilities, and to explore how they can become more inclusive and considerate for all.

1. Purpose
The toilet environments in transportation infrastructure—such as railways, airports, expressways, and roadside stations (hereinafter referred to as “transportation infrastructure”)—have undergone significant improvement in recent years. Efforts have been made to incorporate universal design, consider privacy, enhance security, and address various needs in addition to cleanliness and convenience.
Additionally, there is a growing demand for new perspectives in toilet design and management as the society changes. With increased social participation by women and improved mobility for people with disabilities, older adults, and LGBTQ+ individuals, It becomes essential for toilets in transportation infrastructure to be designed and operated with an understanding of diversity. Designing restrooms that everyone can use with peace of mind is a key element in supporting free mobilization and is directly connected to realizing an inclusive society.
This symposium will focus on the roles of the toilets in the transportation infrastructure and and showcase the latest initiatives. We would like to deepen discussion on “Toilets that are kind to everyone” based on the diverse perspectives. We will explore the challenges and possibilities for a future achievement where everyone can travel comfortably by examining the social impact of improvements to restroom environments.
