The 41st National Toilet Symposium 2025 – Event Report

The 41st National Toilet Symposium 2025 was successfully held on Monday, November 10, 2025, at the Multipurpose Hall, B2 Floor, Japan Society for the Promotion of Machine Industry.

The symposium, organized by the Japan Toilet Association (JTA), focused on “Toilets that are kind to everyone” in vital transportation infrastructures (railways, airports, expressways, and roadside stations), and saw participation from a large number of attendees from across Japan. Active discussions were held on the latest initiatives and future challenges surrounding restroom environments.

Key Highlights

Keynote Speeches addressed the essential roles of restrooms in society:

  • Mr. Kenichi Koyama (Director, Evaluation Office, Road Bureau Planning Division, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) presented on “The Evolving Roles of ‘Roadside Station’ Restrooms as Local Hubs and Disaster Preparedness Centers” in the “Roadside Station 3rd Stage” concept.
  • Professor Tetsuo Akiyama (Chuo University) provided direction for improving comfort through design and operation in his lecture, “How to Eliminate Restroom Queues?”

Thematic Sessions facilitated concrete discussions on inclusive design and management:

  • The planned session, “Why Do Restrooms in Transportation Infrastructure Get Congested?” included diverse panelists from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, advocacy groups, transportation operators, and technology companies, leading to practical discussions on resolving congestion.
  • Another session emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for everyone, regardless of gender, titled “The Era of ‘Preparedness’ for Male Restrooms Too.”

Additionally, newly established Activity Presentations offered a platform for young researchers to introduce diverse topics and ongoing studies, fostering learning and exchange among participants.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all the speakers, exhibitors, and everyone who attended and supported the symposium, including the provision of accessibility support (sign language interpretation and UD Talk). The Japan Toilet Association will continue its activities to realize a comfortable and inclusive society through better toilets.
